We spoke with Takahiro Konishi, a Manager within the DPS R&D Dept, about his current work, future vision, and his mission of delivering print technology to customers.
Driving Innovation in Digital Printing
The DPS R&D Dept is responsible for developing Komori's digital printing presses. Unlike traditional offset printing, digital printing supports variable data printing and rapid turnaround times. By advancing these technologies - which ease the workload at printing sites and minimize waste - Takahiro is helping create a more sustainable and flexible printing environment.
Career Journey and Current Challenges
"I joined Komori in 2008 and initially worked on developing inspection systems for offset printing presses. In 2017, I transferred to the DPS R&D Dept, where I now focus on system development for digital printing presses. Our systems enhance print quality through ink discharge control, dot pattern design, and image correction. By maximizing the beauty of photos and graphics, we enable high-definition printing that adds value to promotional materials and packaging.
We also work to make high-quality printing accessible to everyone by automating job workflows and implementing user-friendly features. These technologies not only improve efficiency but also help reduce the workload at printing sites."
The Emotional Impact of Variable Printing
"When I see variable printing in action at a customer site, I truly feel the social impact of our work. This technology allows different images and information to be printed on each sheet continuously, enabling personalized printing that was difficult with offset.
On-demand printing - producing only what is needed, when it is needed--reduces waste and is environmentally friendly. It perfectly reflects Komori's purpose: Delivering Kando "beyond expectations" by contributing to society with print technology."
Delivering Tangible Value Through Technology
"Printing sites face serious challenges such as labor shortages and the difficulty of passing down complex technical skills. That's why I believe developing user-friendly printing presses is so meaningful.
The most rewarding part of my role is creating 'visible value' through technology. I focus on optimizing print quality to meet customer expectations and improving usability and workflow efficiency. We aim to build printing presses that anyone can operate easily, while also streamlining processes.
When customers say, 'The prints look beautiful,' 'It's easy to use,' or 'Our work has become easier,' it's deeply satisfying. Looking ahead, I want to develop high-performance digital printing presses that are easy for anyone to use, minimize resource waste, and support true on-demand printing--contributing to a more sustainable and adaptable printing environment."
A Memorable Success: Troubleshooting Abroad
"While working on inspection systems for offset presses, I once had a memorable experience troubleshooting a system error at a customer site overseas. At first, the cause was unclear, which was concerning, but I traveled to the site and resolved the issue successfully. That customer later introduced a second press, which left a lasting impression on me."
Off-Time: Traveling with Family
"My hobby is traveling with my family. Recently, we visited Miyako Island in Japan, where my child was amazed by the emerald-green ocean. They were so inspired that they drew pictures of it after we returned home. Watching my child grow through different experiences is something I truly look forward to."
Facing challenges in the printing industry and creating inspiration through technology-- Takahiro's work is a daily embodiment of Komori's corporate purpose.
